I got a hold of the yen press Yen+ magazine yesterday at Borders Express. I was a little skeptical about picking it up. Usually I buy individual volumes with the exception of the Monthly Shonen Jump. Well whats interesting about this magazine other then its huge list of titles in it(11 in total) is that they arent all manga from japan. In fact only about half are. The rest are from Korea and here in the States. Sounds a little scary for some people....Not me I'm open to new things. I have to admit I really enjoyed the English/korean mangas it had in it as opposed to the japanese ones which were also good i'd say they can compete in quality. Now i will break it down by titles.

First
Maximum Ride. I havent read any of the works of
James Patterson but this manga makes me consider thinking about it. The only thing dissapointing was that it was over to soon and now i'll have to wait till next month to continue it.
The first thing I have to point out is its amazing and unique art style.
Nare Lee has an amazingly unique style all her own. I really loved how the characters looked and the detail in drawings
The story itself I cannot comment on because the first chapter mainly seemed to introduce the characters. But after an introduction like that I am really looking forward to more.

Next is
Night School. This title was interesting and original to say the least. It seems to have a lot of things going on at once. I'm not really sure what to think of this title. Seems to be about a school at night with monsters and such. But hey who says all first chapters have to be epic masterpieces. Maybe it will get better.
-
Pig Bride was one of the more interesting titles. About a boy who is told he is to get married to an ugly girl(whom wears a pig mask, so who knows for sure) when he is 16. He was 8 at the time and when he turns 16 sure enough....
I liked the comedy elements in this, despite it looking serious at some points its really funny too. I have to say I am really looking forward to the next chapter.
-
Sarasah was another one of the titles I disliked. But then again its only the first chapter. But all she did was try to get this guy to like her the whole time(he hates her with a passion) and its just not something i'm into. But the ending was interesting so I may read the next chapter.

One Fine Day was...just wow...I am so unsure what to say about this. It was....adorable. I am not sure where this manga is going but it is just adorable. Overall I really dont see any plot yet, just small stories of the characters. A cat, dog, mouse, and their err owner? See they change into, catgirl, doggirl, and mouse girl. So its confusing to think of what that means. Seriously they they are adorably cute, read this one if only for that. Cant wait for their continued adventures.

Jack Frost looks a whole lot more serious then the rest. With the exception of Maximum Ride which also had a more serious look to it. So it starts off the first few pages, I swear it looks like its an anime, completely dark and hard to see anything. A girls first day in the new class and....
*Spoilers*She gets her head cut off apparently by a guy in her class. She talks to herself quite a bit despite being a decapitated head. Pretty much leaves us at that in the end waiting for the next chapter*Spoiler over*
With its combination of beautiful artwork as well as sense of humor and horror. I think I will enjoy this manga and am looking forward to the next chapter.

Next the japanese side with many more interesting mangas. I have to admit, its really hard switching from Right to Left in normal manga to Left to Right for the English/korean manga and then back to the Right to Left again.
The common theme I noticed in this side of the magazine is....ninja related stuff. Now I have nothing against ninjas but it was overwhelming ninja after ninja manga.
Anyhow first I will talk about
Soul Eater, the manga featured on the cover to the left. Admittingly the cover makes it looks silly. Surprisingly It turned out really good and I enjoyed it a lot.
Its about a girl Maka and a demon scythe Soul Eater. They have to collect 99 human souls and one witch soul and then he can become the scythe of the shinigami, a grim reaper like character. She is apparently made Soul Eater for the purpose of making a scythe better then her dad(whom her mom made) who is the current scythe because Maka hates him despite his feelings for his daughter. Well the first chapter they get their 99th soul and then start after the witches soul. Which is a lot harder then they imagined. And they were in for a surprise soon after.
With its fun characters, and art it was a really enjoyable manga and i cant wait for the next chapter. Definitely one of my favorites in the magazine.

Nabari No Ou, A well drawn series but its plot didnt go very far in the first chapter. It seemed rather generic. Average boy finds out he has ninja powers and doesnt want any part of it. Hopefully it will start to develop in later chapters.

Sumomomo, Momomo. I think I got that right. This one was actually kind of interesting despite its seeminly strange plot. Starts off with this girl, her father tells her that she is not strong enough to keep the family name strong and healthy because she is a woman. So he then commands her to go and find the strongest person to marry and have kids with. The guy she found, apparently this marriage was set up when they were born??, is a total wuss. He had given up on the way of the warrior and decided to be a public prosecutor. She requests his marriage and then to immediately "Do it". He refuses her and tries to get away. We learn more about their past in the chapter.
It was surprisingly entertaining and comedy filled. The main character yells out laws and punishments to people of their wrong doings...kind of...different.. Well i'll have to read the next chapter to see if it will be as exciting.

Bamboo Blade, first thought...Another ninja/warrior manga......But it had its own unique sense of humor that got me interested in it. The main character makes who is a teacher and leader of the kendo club, makes a bet with one of his buddies who is a kendo club teacher at another school that they can beat him. And if he wins he gets sushi for a year. He is broke and feels that he must win this at all costs. Problem is he has only one member in his kendo club. And now he must set up a team of 5 girls to go against his friend for the sushi!
Despite its sillyness it was a lot of fun to read. I think i'll be enjoying this more in the future. This was also the only manga in here that got 2 chapters.

Higurashi When They Cry was a complete turn in the way this was going, finally not about warriors or ninjas or something of that sort. Right off the bat I can tell this is a really nicely done manga. The artwork is really beautiful and that alone is enough to make me want to continue it.
The story so far is about this guy named Keiichi Maebara who has moved to the town of Hinamizawa 3 weeks ago. Though you cant tell, he seems to be a really popular guy already. But its a small town and everyone knows each other. He later learns about an event happening in the town involving the gruesome death of someone. But nobody is saying anything about it.
It ends making me uneasily wait for the next chapter. I have always enjoyed mysteries and though I cant tell if this is going to be mystery or horror or maybe both. I cant wait for the next chapter.
